How a Racing Partnership Names a Horse

Naming a horse, like most aspects of horse racing is based on tradition. Names are traditionally created by using a combination of the sire and dam’s name. Usually the name will play off both and sometimes just one of the names and have a creative or witty play on them. But of course not all names use this form. Sometimes names can be representative of a specific trait of the horse or an experience the horse may have had, or even something that has meaning to the owners. In any case naming can be a very fun experience.

Before you have your heart set on a specific name you must first visit The Jockey Club website to ensure that your name is acceptable and approved. Like anything, there are rules and regulations that you must abide by when naming a horse. For example a horse’s name may not contain more than 18 characters including spaces. In addition, names cannot have commercial or artistic value, and cannot be suggestive or offensive. Furthermore, names cannot be used if another horse that is currently running is using that name. At the end of the day, the Jockey Club has the final say, and a complete list of the naming rules and regulations can be found at http://www.jockeyclub.com/registry.asp?section=3#six.

At Blinkers On Racing Stable, our horse racing partnership likes to come up with creative names that are either a play on the dam and sire’s names or are reflective of a horse’s attributes or experiences. For example, our multiple G1 winner, Turbulent Descent, is by Congrats out of Roger’s Sue. Clearly, her name has nothing to do with her dam and sire’s names, but rather an unfortunate plane flight on her way to California. After Turbulent Descent was purchased at the OBS sale in Ocala Florida she was flown out to Southern California to race. During her flight here, the plane experienced a good amount of turbulence and Turbulent Descent cut her ankle in the midst of all the turbulence. Luckily, the cut was superficial and turned out not be an issue. Since then Turbulent Descent has gone on to win three G1 races and her name has become popular across the country. Another horse for Blinkers On Racing Stable, Clearly a Cowboy, got his name the more traditional way. By With Distinction out of Cowgirl Lucky, Clearly a Cowboy is a perfect play on both his sire and dam’s names.

At the end of the day naming a horse is a personal decision made by the thoroughbred partnership or sole owner. There is no exact method you have to follow. Sometimes a name will come to you and just fit a horse and other times it may take a little longer and require some clever thinking. If you ever have a hard time naming a horse or are questioning the names you have come up with, watch this video of two horses with very clever names, I’m sure it will make you laugh! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgSZL63VoPs

A Thoroughbred Partnership’s Dream

“The Run for the Roses”, 554 roses to be exact, woven together into a magnificent blanket that is draped over the winner of the most prestigious thoroughbred horse racing event in North America. The Kentucky Derby has been steeped in history since its inception in 1875 when Aristides won the inaugural event. The event was mirrored after the Epsom Derby and originally run at 1 ½ miles until 1896 when it was changed to its current distance of 1 ¼ miles. Restricted to three year old horses, and predominantly colts or geldings, this race has produced some of the most influential thoroughbreds in all of horse racing.

Not only does the Kentucky Derby represent the most prestigious race of the year in North America, but it marks the beginning of the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown is a series of three races for three year olds that begins with the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, then the Preakness Stakes on the third Saturday in May, and finally ends with the Belmont Stakes which is raced five weeks after the Kentucky Derby. From the inception of the Triple Crown only 11 horses have ever won all three and none have won since Affirmed in 1978. Year after year this journey of three hard fought races proves to be the toughest feat in thoroughbred horse racing.

The Kentucky Derby is the one event that most anyone who has little or no knowledge of the sport knows about. It’s a tradition and event that is held in high regard and one of the biggest reasons that new owners come into the game. The dream of winning the Kentucky Derby or merely being on “The Derby Trail” is something that every owner in the game dreams about. It can be hard to explain or express but when “Derby Fever” hits, you know that your passion for the game has taken over. All of the tough times you have gone through, and all of the money you have invested doesn’t seem to matter. You just want to compete at the highest level in the game, The Kentucky Derby.

The Beauty of the Kentucky Derby is that anyone and any horse in the race has a legitimate chance to win. Unlike other sports or competitions, it doesn’t matter how much you spent on your horse or if you are the sole owner or part of a thoroughbred partnership because time and time again long shots continue to prevail in this prestigious race. In 2003 Funny Cide, a $75,000 purchase by 6 long-time friends and novices to the game put together a horse racing partnership and ended up winning the $1 million purse in the Kentucky Derby. Their venture into the game with the dream of winning the Derby changed their lives forever and gave them an experience and prestige that only a select few will ever get to experience. Recently, continued success has been enjoyed by another horse racing partnership in the Kentucky Derby. The 2011 winner, Animal Kingdom, is owned by a thoroughbred partnership, Team Valor. Once again showing that winning the Kentucky Derby does not depend on a single owner but can consist of many owners coming together to live their dream.

In the next few weeks when you tune in to the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, throw a Derby party and celebrate this great tradition as they wood at the track. Make the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep, and ladies make sure to wear the most extravagant and elegant hat you can find! Then you will be enjoying the event in full fashion!

Race Horse Partnership Trainer

The alarm sounds, its 3:30am already… Out the door and at the track the horses are fed and ready for training by 5:30am. And if you are a Southern California trainer you probably have been to both Hollywood Park and Santa Anita before 6am to check on all your horses. The training schedule that was posted in the barn last night is the road map for all the help at the barn from grooms to exercise riders, which charts the path to keeping the horses fit and ultimately getting them to the races.

Outsiders looking in may think that training horses only involves keeping the horses healthy and making sure they get their daily exercise and upkeep, but much more falls on the shoulders of a trainer. One of the most important aspects of training is the ability to have goals for each horse, and a race targeted from the condition book. Having a tentative race date allows the trainer to work backwards knowing how many breezes he needs in order to get his horse fit for the targeted race. The ability to do this requires an understanding of the condition book, knowing where each horse fits; in distance, surface, and class. And at the same time the trainer must balance the often opposing view of each owner who many times can have unrealistic goals for their thoroughbreds.

When it comes down to it training is like running a small business, where your employees are your help; grooms, exercise riders, and assistants and owners are your clients. Trainers are constantly trying to succeed at being both a successful horseman as well as a successful businessman. To be the best it takes expertise in both areas. But when it comes down to it a trainer must have a firm dedication to his horses, owners and staff that is ultimately guided for his passion for the game.

At Blinkers On Racing Stable we consider ourselves one of the most passionate thoroughbred partnerships in horse racing. Like a trainer we must maintain the appropriate balance between horseman and businessman in order to reach our goals. Here at Blinkers On we take pride in having one of the most passionate and dedicated trainers in Southern California to represent our horse racing partnership.

Race Horses For Sale

Sold!..Whack! The auctioneer points to you and slams the hammer down declaring you the highest bidder of a beautiful chestnut filly that is now just exiting the auction ring. Last year this same scenario took place at two year old in training sales throughout the country about 1,700 times. But you know that you saw something special in that filly you just purchased. The way she stood alertly and bright eyed at the barn, and especially the way she caught your eye after hours of watching 350 training videos, just gliding effortlessly across the track.

Two year old sales can be one of the most exciting thoroughbred auctions to purchase a race horse from. Unlike yearling and weanling sales two year old sales allow you as the buyer or your thoroughbred partnership, the opportunity to evaluate the running ability of the race horse before purchasing it. These thoroughbreds showcase their ability to run (or not) in under tack shows breezing 1/8th to 3/8th of a mile. At Blinkers On we believe our ability to analyze race horse stride has been a key to the success of our horse racing partnership.

Buying a horse is most definitely an art and not a science, and that is what makes it challenging. At Blinkers On Racing Stable, a leader in thoroughbred partnerships in California, we specialize and succeed in purchasing two year olds in training. With the expertise of bloodstock adviser Greg Gilchrest, Blinkers On’s horse racing partnership has been successful in earning a lifetime win percentage of 24% and in the money 61% of the time. The majority of these statistics were accumulated from horses purchased from two year old in training sales over the past 6 years.

This year another 1,500 two year olds in training will be sold at auction. They will range from horses sold and purchased from yearling sales brought back to be sold as two year olds in training, to horses right off the farm entering the sales pavilion for the first time. Either way, the excitement and potential will be second to none. Many will have the potential to compete at the highest levels of racing beginning in the summer of this year and throughout the rest of their careers as race horses. The opportunities are endless with the right thoroughbred partnership. Will you be a part of it?

Horse Racing Partnerships

Horse racing partnerships are a fairly new phenomenon in the Thoroughbred world. Once little-used and even frowned upon, syndicates are now thriving at all levels of racing. When Funny Cide stole the hearts of America in 2003 (see story here), the fairy tale of a little horse racing partnership that hit the big time brought syndicates into the limelight. Eight years later, partnerships are still on the rise as people attempt to recreate the story of the $5,000 buy-in that led to some of the biggest purse wins on the American racing stage.

The Manual

Parents are often caught saying, “I wish these kids came with an owner’s manual!” That same sentiment holds on the racing scene… but the “children” are 16-hand musclebound animal athletes, and the situation is made ever more complex by the people and places that are intimately connected to the lives of each active Thoroughbred. If you’ve ever wanted the “owner’s manual” for syndicate racing, look no further!

Step 1: Determine Your Goals as an Investor

This includes your monetary input and goals, as well as the more visceral and less easily defined aspects of racing. If you just want to see a stable monetary gain, then horse racing is not for you. You are buying into a living animal with a personality, temperament, and limitations. Your horse will only physically be able to undertake a certain number of starts per year, and every time out of the gate will run the risk of a debilitating injury. This is not an arena in which to be fronting money you can’t afford to lose. But if the pulse-pounding, high-risk chance at great reward draws you, and you’re putting up income that truly is disposable, read on.

Step 2: Determine Your Investment Strategy

Start with the amount of money you have to invest, and determine how you feel that money is best spent. Keep in mind that after the initial buy-in, you will be responsible for covering a share of your horse’s (or horses’) expenses each quarter as long as you’re a member of the partnership. Many investors with a finite amount of money to spend choose to diversify, buying smaller shares in several animals rather than a large portion of interest in a single horse. As with diversification of stocks, this strategy allows you to create a sophisticated portfolio built on the prospects of living, breathing, four-legged Thoroughbred shares.

Step 3: Find a Satisfactory Stable (or Stables)

Some experienced individuals opt for private partnerships, managed by private owners who take on all the organizational tasks of registration, scheduling, care, and training. Most who opt to buy into horse racing partnerships, however, do so through the avenue of an established racing stable that is designed to organize and manage partnerships.

When choosing a stable, look for established organization, age, and success rates. Choose a reputable industry leader with a yearly routine, a long track record and personnel that understand all aspects of the horse racing business. Look for a company that is happy to show you their credentials and can prove a long history of involvement with an influence on the upper levels of racing. And above all, make sure that you choose a reputable stable that puts priority on your horse’s health and quality of life.

You can choose to buy into multiple animals managed by multiple stables. This can give you geographic flexibility and a share in multiple “markets.” However, opting to buy into shares of multiple horses that run with a single stable can give you the edge of building trust and lasting relationships with a single business entity. Working with a single stable also dramatically simplifies your paperwork and quarterly bookkeeping strategies.

Step 4: Jump In

After you’ve bought into your first animal or animals, you’ll want to check in regularly with your horse’s “team.” A good stable will send you regular updates through mail or email, as well as quarterly statements requesting your portion of expenses and quarterly reports detailing where your money has gone. You’ll want to remain apprised of training decisions, veterinary checkups, and race days. Your stable should disseminate any winnings in a timely and transparent manner, with a percentage breakdown showing who receives what portion of the purse and a promptly issued check for your portion.

Step 5: Keep Records

You’ll want to keep all correspondence, statements, and paperwork from your stable, as well as copies of checks you mail and checks you receive. Managing your Thoroughbred or Thoroughbreds should become just another aspect of your regular financial planning (and it will probably become the most fun part!). In the event that you should choose to leave the partnership, your records will allow you to determine what you’ve put into the animal and what you believe your share is worth. You’ll have to follow your stable’s guidelines for selling your share, but having your ducks in a row will allow you to protect yourself and your financial assets.

Hollywood Race Park was built in the 1930s, hot on the heels of the opening of Del Mar by Bing Crosby and company. The Hollywood Turf Club was formed with Jack Warner of the Warner Brothers as chairman, and the 600-plus shareholders included film industry greats like Al Jolson, Walt Disney, and Bing Crosby himself. From Hollywood Park’s opening day on June 10, 1938, to the present day, membership in Hollywood Turf Club was a mark of luxury, reserved for California’s racing elite.

Location

Hollywood Park is centrally located for Southern California, three miles east of Los Angeles International Airport. The track is accessible from the 105, 405, and 110 Freeways, 11 miles from downtown L.A. and a short drive from Beverly Hills.

Tracks

Hollywood boasts expansive track space, including a one and one-eight miles cushion track, a one-mile infield turf course, and a half-mile training track east of the stables. The main track features two beautiful lakes with nearly a mile of shoreline between them, dredged in 1991 as the park rejuvenated its traditional “Lakes and Flowers” branding and image.

History

The Hollywood Gold Cup, the track’s yearly signature race, was won in its inaugural 1938 running by the legendary Seabiscuit. Including Seabiscuit’s win, the Hollywood Gold Cup has been won 11 times by Thoroughbreds later named Horse of the Year, including such greats as Citation (1951), Affirmed (1979), and Skip Away (1998). Citation became the first million-dollar earner in horse racing upon winning the 1951 Gold Cup.

The track was shut down during World War II, and again in 1949 after the clubhouse and grandstand were engulfed in flames stretching a quarter mile across the park, two weeks before the summer meet. Hollywood Park’s 1949 summer meeting was conducted at Santa Anita, and the track re-opened after major repairs in 1950.

Hollywood Park has been a major player in California betting innovation. The exacta bet was pioneered at the track in 1971, and the first Sunday races were run at Hollywood after the law was changed under Ronald Reagan’s governorship in 1973. The track was so successful that a major $3 million renovation was undertaken in 1972. In 1979, Amtote’s TM 300 automated wagering system revolutionized betting systems in California and across the U.S.

Golden Gate Fields racing is a high-class Thoroughbred experience with a distinctly Californian personality. The Turf Club Restaurant offers spectacular views of the track and the San Francisco Bay. The track itself is located within sight of multiple national landmarks, creating a one-of-a-kind ambiance for the racing experience.

Location

Golden Gate Fields is located 11 miles from San Francisco and is a short drive from Napa Valley. Situated in the town of Albany, CA near Oakland, the track has the odd distinction of crossing city boundaries. The track actually crosses the line between Albany and Berkeley; the stable is located in Berkeley and the stands in Albany. Golden Gate Fields features fine dining, a spacious Club House, multiple simulcast rooms for viewing races at other tracks, and free seating in the general admissions areas.

History

The first meet at Golden Gate took place on February 1, 1941. Heavy rains resulted in rough track conditions and a meet that lasted only 5 days. America’s involvement in two World Wars then put racing on hold for 6 years. The track reopened to great fanfare on September 9, 1947. That year, two horses (Fair Truckle and Count Speed) caused a stir by setting world records at the track in consecutive races on the afternoon of October 4.

Since then, the track has hosted many world-class horses, trainers, and jockeys. From Citation, 1948’s Horse of the Year, to Lost in the Fog, Sprinter of 2005, Golden Gate has seen award-winners grace the track year in and year out. Jockey Bill Shoemaker, who would go on to hold the most wins of any rider worldwide, had his first career victory at Golden Gate Fields in 1949. Check out this link for the track’s full history.

Tracks

As of this posting, the main track at Golden Gate is Tapeta, a combination of sand, rubber, and fiber that does not turn to mud even under hard rains. Golden Gate was only the eighth track in the country to install an engineered surface like this one, which is gentler on the horses in all conditions. Golden Gate is also home to a secondary firm turf track.

Schedule

Races are held in May and June to take advantage of spring/early summer temperatures and breezes. A fall meet also takes place each year from October through January. Races are held on Wednesdays through Sundays and on Monday holidays during these periods. Simulcast races from other tracks are available year-round, according to the Cal Racing website.

Thoroughbred sale

When considering involvement in a Thoroughbred sale, make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. No matter how excellent the animal, no matter how good you think your odds will be, remember that you’re investing cold, hard cash and you need a team of people you can trust to manage that investment.

Going it Alone

Those who own horses alone are those who have serious disposable income to spare. The cost of a good horse alone can run many thousands of dollars. Add to that cost training, food, boarding, veterinary care, farrier’s fees, transport to race locations, and jockey fees. You’re looking at a massive cost in order to own a single animal, not to mention the daunting task of learning your way through the artistry of the racing world on your own, without a trustworthy guide. And keep in mind that, according to a Crocker Racing Stable article on horse ownership, about a third of foals bred to racing never start in a single race, and half of those that do get to start never win!

Syndicate Racing

A few lucky souls have the background and the income to make it in horse racing alone. For the rest of us, syndicate partnerships, like those offered here at Blinkers On, allow the thrill and possibility of Thoroughbred ownership for a manageable cost. According to an article by Horse Hats Racing Club, syndicate racing was pioneered back in 1969 by Dogwood Stable’s Cot Campbell. Since the first syndication, racing partnerships have made owning a piece of the Thoroughbred pie affordable and manageable for the Average Joe.

For example, right now we’re offering a share in the two year old filly, Hidinginplainsight, by Elusive Quality out of Hot Storm, starting at $5,995 with 5% interest expenses. She’s NATC Futurity, Breeders Cup, and EFB nominated, with a spotless pedigree. Hidinginplainsight is one of many examples of the quality we strive to offer our partners here at Blinkers On. And we keep a share in all of our horses, so you know we’ve put our money where our mouth is. We manage all aspects of Thoroughbred ownership and keep our partners well informed of all our decisions. With a share in a partnership, you’ll share all the costs of ownership with others and share in the thrill of race day as an insider, not just a spectator. And with Blinkers On, you’ll know you have an experienced partner guiding you through the ins and outs of a Thoroughbred sale and racing strategy.

Blinkers On

Blinkers On Racing Stable, a leader in thoroughbred horse racing partnerships, brings together the finest in thoroughbred horse racing expertise with the best in business know-how, and above all, a team of people you can trust, to manage your investment.

The Del Mar Track is a fabled track, tied into California’s unique culture as much as to the racing world. In the 1930s, Bing Crosby and a band of his California buddies dreamed of a track that would mix laid-back, long-night California culture with the excitement of the races. They first met at Warner Brothers’ Studios and formed the Del Mar Turf Club, mixing Hollywood and horses in the dream of a track “where the turf meets the surf, down at old Del Mar.”

Location

Located in the seaside community of Del Mar, just off Interstate 5 on the bank of the San Dieguito River, the track is a sprawling playground where the taste of old Hollywood still lingers. You can follow this link for a virtual tour of Del Mar’s historic buildings and grounds.

History

Since its inaugural run in 1937, the Del Mar track has been a destination “where no one is in a hurry but the horses,” a summertime playground for racers and racing fans. The track has been updated with a new grandstand, finished in the 1990s, that stayed true to the track’s original Spanish-style charm. Over 17,000 people per day enjoy the festivities at Del Mar. The track boasts 8 restaurants and features classic signature drinks – Del Margaritas, Del Martinis, and Del Mary’s, among others. The Four O’Clock Fridays summer series offers twilight racing followed by evening concerts throughout the 43-day, high-stakes racing meet.

To this day, before the first race and after the last, the voice of Bing Crosby still sings out “where the turf meets the surf, down at old Del Mar…” Bing’s racing legacy lives on, with all the modern glitz and glamour appropriate to a modern California cultural icon.

Santa Anita Race Park is a truly iconic racetrack, one of the most famous in North America. The track has echoed American history from its design by Hoover Dam architect Gordon B. Kaufman, through California’s up-and-down history in World War II, and including the 1984 Equestrian Olympic Games. Each year, Santa Anita hosts the Santa Anita Derby and the Santa Anita Handicap, two of the most prestigious races in Southern California.

Location

Santa Anita Park is located 14 miles northeast of Los Angeles in Arcadia, California. Santa Anita track is 30 miles from Los Angeles International Airport, accessible from the Harbor Freeway or I-210, among other local Freeways. The Park is located just outside the San Gabriel Reservoir in a historic location, on land dedicated to California racing since 1934.

Facilities

Santa Anita’s amenities include premier dining at the classic FrontRunner restaurant and modern luxury at the new Sirona’s restaurant, featuring a 70-foot bar, 52-foot TV screens, and four massive projector screens. Regular racing fans at the Santa Anita track can become members of the Thoroughbreds club, eligible for discounted tickets, promotional offers, and free gifts, among other perks. The tracks include a new dirt track, an infield turf track, and a training track.

History

Santa Anita first opened in 1934 under architect Gordon B. Kaufman, who also orchestrated the Hoover Dam. Since those days the park has hosted such unprecedented events as Seabiscuit’s win in 1940 and the 1984 Olympics Equestrian Competition. In 1942, Santa Anita entered a darker chapter in its history. According to a 2009 article by the Los Angeles Times, Santa Anita Park served as an internment camp (the largest in the U.S.) for approximately 19,000 Japanese-Americans who were held as a threat to national security after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Today, a plaque near the Park’s entrance commemorates this controversial period in the track’s history.

In 2006, according to an article on eHow.com, Santa Anita became eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places due to its long-standing history, involvement with American WWII-era politics and policy, and the sweeping Art Deco facades designed by Kaufman in the early ‘30s.

Season

Santa Anita opens every year on December 26. The spring season continues into April. The fall meeting, runs from early October to early November. According to Cal Racing, live racing occurs Wednesday through Sunday and holiday Mondays during meeting seasons. Simulcast sessions are broadcast from other tracks as scheduled in the off season, and Santa Anita opens its doors to private functions, including weddings, outside the racing season.
